Microsoft has announced a sweeping architectural mandate requiring all newly constructed Azure data centers globally to utilize 100% direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems. The design shift is required to manage extreme thermal densities generated by next-generation Nvidia and custom Maia AI accelerator clusters.
Legacy air-cooled server racks max out around 30 to 40 kilowatts of power per cabinet, whereas modern AI clusters operate at 100 kilowatts and beyond. Microsoft's direct liquid cooling design circulates closed-loop fluid across copper cold plates attached directly to silicon dies, reducing facility water consumption by up to 80%.
