In a direct response to Tesla's upcoming Cybercab launch event, Waymo engineering leaders publicly asserted that camera-only vision stacks lack the physical redundancy required to guarantee commercial robotaxi safety across adverse weather and complex edge cases.

Waymo's 6th-generation hardware suite incorporates long-range LiDAR, imaging radar, and high-resolution cameras to build a 360-degree point-cloud representation of surrounding traffic. According to Waymo, optical sensors alone are susceptible to lens occlusions, blinding glare, and depth miscalibrations in low-visibility environments.
